A controversial banner displayed at the Lekki Central Mosque in Lagos State, which declared, “Jesus Christ is not God. He is a Prophet and Messenger of God!” has been removed following widespread backlash on social media.

The Jesus is not God banner, which went viral on Wednesday, sparked outrage among Nigerians, particularly Christians, who criticized the message as blasphemous and an unnecessary provocation. The controversy quickly ignited heated debates between Christians and Muslims, with many calling for tolerance and mutual respect in interfaith relations.

Amid the uproar, a man identified as Tunde Alabi, who claimed to be a member of the mosque, took to social media to address the issue. In a video shared online, Alabi visited the mosque to confirm that the banner had been removed.

According to Alabi, upon seeing the viral post, he immediately reached out to the mosque management, who assured him that the offensive banner had been taken down. His visit to the mosque confirmed this, and he offered an apology on behalf of the mosque.

“I apologize to Nigerians for this act. The banner has been removed,” Alabi said in the video, urging people to embrace peace and understanding.

The removal of the banner has eased tensions to some extent, but it has also stressed the importance of respecting religious sensitivities in a pluralistic society like Nigeria. Many have called for proactive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
