Former WBC Champion Thierry Jacob Passes Away
French former boxing world champion Thierry Jacob has passed away at the age of 59.
The news was announced on Friday, December 20, by Natacha Bouchart, the mayor of his hometown, Calais.
Jacob made history in the boxing world in 1992 when he claimed the WBC super bantamweight title. This remarkable achievement took place in his hometown of Calais, where he defeated Mexican boxer Daniel Zaragoza in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
Mayor Bouchart expressed her sadness over the loss in a heartfelt Facebook post, saying, “We begin this day with sad news. Thierry Jacob died overnight, so young.” She also highlighted the former champion’s significant impact on the Calais community.
Jacob began his professional boxing career in 1984 and retired in 1994 with an impressive record of 39 wins and only 6 losses. Although his reign as WBC super bantamweight champion was brief, ending in his first title defense against American Tracy Harris Patterson in New York, Jacob’s contributions to the sport and his local community were profound.
The Jacob family’s legacy in boxing continues through his son, Romain Jacob. In 2014, Romain won the European super featherweight title, carrying forward the influence and passion for boxing that Thierry Jacob instilled in his family and community.
