James Gunn Unveils Action-Packed Superman Reboot
By Benjamin Abioye
The first trailer for James Gunn’s anticipated Superman reboot’ has been released, sparking excitement as Hollywood eyes it as one of 2025’s major blockbusters.
David Corenswet stars as the Man of Steel, aiming to launch a fresh chapter for DC Studios under James Gunn and producer Peter Safran, who took charge in 2022.
The trailer opens with Superman crashing into an icy terrain and being revived by Krypto the Superdog, a character expected to captivate audiences. Rachel Brosnahan debuts as Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult portrays a bald and sinister Lex Luthor.
Corenswet, known for roles in ‘The Politician’ and ‘Hollywood’, becomes the fourth actor to play Superman in a major film, taking over a decade after Henry Cavill’s portrayal in ‘Man of Steel’. Cavill’s unexpected exit in 2022 left fans divided, with many voicing their disappointment online, believing he deserved to continue the role.
In the trailer, Corenswet’s Superman is shown saving a girl from an explosion, shattering a glass case, and sharing an airborne kiss with Lois Lane. The footage also introduces Clark Kent in the Daily Planet newsroom and rural Kansas scenes with Pa Kent, played by Pruitt Taylor Vince.
Other DC characters make appearances, including Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. The two-minute teaser has been widely praised online, setting the stage for its theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
This Superman film arrives at a crucial time for Hollywood, which is battling “superhero fatigue” following lackluster performances of recent DC movies such as ‘Shazam! Fury of the God’ and ‘The Suicide Squad’. Meanwhile, Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and other Spider-Man spin-offs failed to impress, highlighting a decline in the superhero genre’s dominance.
Despite the challenges, box office expert David A. Gross believes Superman’s long history and enduring appeal can make it a success. “Superman is a classic story,” he said, emphasizing that it resonates with both comic enthusiasts and casual fans.
Director James Gunn has described the movie as action-packed, humorous, and grounded in a fantastical world. Corenswet’s Superman embraces his role as a symbol of hope and positivity. Gunn even credits the actor for bringing back the iconic red trunks, explaining, “Superman wants people, especially kids, to not be afraid of him. He wants to inspire hope.”
Set over a short timeline, the film explores Superman’s struggle to balance his Kryptonian powers with his human upbringing, offering a fresh and relatable take on the iconic character.
