A woman, Olamide Thomas, was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, December 20, 2024, for allegedly making death threats against Seyi Tinubu, the son of Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, via social media.

Olamide faces a three-count charge brought against her by the office of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

The charges relate to a video she allegedly posted on her social media platforms in 2024, wherein she made threatening remarks in Yoruba, claiming that “Mr. Seyi Tinubu would die this year, and misfortune and calamity had befallen the Tinubu family.” These remarks were said to have been intended to harass, threaten, and bully Seyi Tinubu, placing him in fear of death or harm. This action is alleged to have violated Section 24 (2) (a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.

In addition to the threats against Seyi Tinubu, Olamide was also charged with making similar threatening statements against IGP Egbetokun, which were said to have placed him in fear of death, violence, or bodily harm.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all charges during the court session, which was presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite. She was arrested following allegations that she also harassed and threatened IGP Egbetokun, as well as the Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a viral social media post.

The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/636/2024, was filed by a team of police lawyers led by A.A. Egwu. Victor Okoye, representing the prosecution, confirmed that the matter was scheduled for arraignment and was ready to proceed.

Following the reading of the charges, Olamide’s defense counsel, T.J. Aondo (SAN), attempted to make an oral bail application, but this request was denied. Justice Nwite instructed the defense to file a formal bail application, noting that the court would expedite hearing on it as soon as it is submitted.

The judge adjourned the case to December 30 for the commencement of the trial and ordered Olamide Thomas to be remanded in Suleja Correctional Centre until then.
