Tinubu Withdraws From Event After Hearing Of Stampede Deaths

President Bola Tinubu has canceled all his official events in Lagos to honor the victims of stampedes in Abuja and Anambra State.

Tragic incidents unfolded on Saturday, with a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, claiming 10 lives, including children, while another in Okija, Anambra State, led to the deaths of at least 20 people during a rice distribution event.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, issued a statement explaining the cancellation. Tinubu had been scheduled to attend a Boat Regatta event at his Queen’s Drive residence in Ikoyi, Lagos. Despite the presence of dignitaries and officials, he chose to withdraw after being briefed on the tragedies.

Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the incidents and extended condolences to the victims’ families. He also urged state and local authorities to implement strict crowd control measures to prevent future disasters. “It is very disturbing that the events in Abuja and Anambra bear a striking resemblance to a recent tragedy in Ibadan, Oyo State,” Tinubu remarked.

The President emphasized the need for organizers of charitable and humanitarian events to adhere to strict safety protocols. He stated, “These mishaps are avoidable if event planners follow the necessary safeguards to ensure everyone’s safety before and after events.”

While offering prayers for the victims and wishing the injured a swift recovery, Tinubu called for better planning and coordination in public events. He added, “In this season of joy and celebration, we grieve with those mourning the painful losses of their loved ones. May divine comfort and healing be with them.”

The President also conveyed his best wishes to the Lagos State government and organizers of the Boat Regatta event, themed “Our Water, Our Heritage, Our Life,” hoping for a successful and incident-free celebration.
