Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic stampedes that claimed numerous lives in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja.

In a statement issued by his media spokesman, Garba Shehu, Buhari sent heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the affected communities.

Buhari extended his sympathies to the Governors of Oyo and Anambra States, Seyi Makinde and Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, as well as to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike. He urged them to convey his prayers and support to the grieving families and loved ones of the victims.

Buhari also expressed his condolences to the Catholic community, which has been deeply impacted by the stampede that marred its Christmas deliveries in Abuja and wished a speedy recovery for those injured.

Buhari used the opportunity to extend warm Christmas and New Year greetings to all Nigerians, encouraging everyone to reflect on the teachings of Jesus Christ. He emphasized the importance of compassion, unity, and peace during this festive season.

“May the New Year bring us prosperity, peace, and good health,” Buhari stated, offering blessings to the entire nation.

The tragic stampedes included an incident in Abuja where the FCT Police Command confirmed the deaths of 10 people, including four children, during a food distribution event at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama.

In Oyo State, a children’s event at Islamic High School in Ibadan led to a stampede that left 35 dead and many others injured. Similarly, in Anambra State, a stampede occurred at the gate of the Obijackson Centre in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area, leaving many feared dead and others injured.
