Speed Darlington Bailed

Nigerian rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has been granted bail after spending one month in detention.

He was initially arrested on November 27 during a performance in Owerri, Imo State. This marks his second detention in just two months.

Darlington’s arrest followed a petition reportedly filed by Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy. The petition was connected to allegations that Darlington had linked Burna Boy to claims of sexual misconduct involving U.S. rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs. In a viral video, Darlington had implied that Burna Boy may have had inappropriate relations with Combs to secure his Grammy win in 2021 for the “Twice As Tall” album.

On December 9, one of Darlington’s lawyers, Stan Alieke, confirmed that formal charges had been filed against him. Alieke explained why the case faced delays, stating, “Akpi was not arraigned last week because the judges were at a conference, and by next week, the courts will shut down for the festive season until late January. This is why litigation is treated as a last resort after exhausting other options, including Alternative Dispute Resolution.”

However, on Monday, Alieke announced via Instagram that Darlington had been released. Sharing the news, he wrote, “Apki has been granted bail by the court.” Although no details about the bail conditions were disclosed, his release marked the end of his detention.

GWG.ng reports that Darlington’s legal team had earlier criticized the process, emphasizing the need for alternative dispute resolution methods before resorting to litigation.
