Suspected political thugs disrupted activities at the Oredo Local Government Area secretariat in Edo State on Monday stopping the elected chairman, Tom Obaseki from gaining entrance into his office.

Armed with weapons and chanting war songs, the thugs surrounded the premises of the Oredo Local Government Secretariat, creating a tense and chaotic atmosphere that stopped Obaseki from entering his office.

Chairman Obaseki, who had arrived to resume his duties as head of Oredo Local Government, was forced to stay outside and speak to journalists.

Obaseki expressed his concern about the situation, saying, “I came here to continue my work as the elected chairman of Oredo Local Government. I met a whole lot of thugs who have already overtaken the council. This is a very disturbing trend. We are calling on the security agencies to arrest the situation. What is important is that we have a restraining order.”

This incident comes after a ruling by the Edo State High Court on Friday, which invalidated the suspension of Obaseki and 17 other council chairmen by the Edo State House of Assembly. The suspension, initiated by a petition from Governor Monday Okpebholo, cited alleged insubordination and gross misconduct as reasons for the action.

In response to the issue, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), stated that the Edo State House of Assembly does not have the constitutional authority to suspend elected chairmen and their deputies in the state.
