WhatsApp has announced that starting from January 2025, it would no longer give support to some older smartphones.

WhatsApp revealed that it will discontinue support for certain smartphones including Android phones, as well as iPhones running iOS 12 or earlier. This move will affect users who have smartphones with outdated operating systems.

According to WhatsApp’s FAQ page, the app will stop supporting smartphones such as Android phones running Android KitKat, which was released in 2013. Additionally, users with devices running KaiOS will also lose access to WhatsApp. The company emphasized that impacted users will receive notifications before the cutoff date. WhatsApp advised users to back up their important data in the affected smartphones before support ends.

WhatsApp explained that this decision is part of an ongoing effort to focus on newer phone models and to improve the app’s features. “Our goal is to provide a private and reliable service for as many people as possible,” WhatsApp stated. “To do so, we regularly review how WhatsApp is being used, including our growing set of features that advance global private calling and messaging.”

The company further clarified that users with affected devices would be notified in advance and encouraged to upgrade to newer models. “If we stop supporting your device or operating system, you will be notified in WhatsApp and reminded several times to upgrade,” the statement added.

The list of Android devices that will no longer support WhatsApp from January 2025 includes several models from Samsung, LG, and Sony, particularly those released over ten years ago. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, and Galaxy S4 Mini will be impacted. Similarly, Motorola’s Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, and Moto E 2014 will also lose WhatsApp support. Other affected brands include HTC and LG, with models such as the HTC One X and LG Optimus G.

WhatsApp has urged users with these older devices to upgrade to newer smartphones to continue using the app and keep receiving important updates and support.
