Kendrick Lamar has been named the #1 pop star of 2024 by Billboard, sparking mixed reactions online.

The list, compiled by Billboard’s editorial staff, features other notable names such as Jelly Roll, Billie Eilish, and Charli XCX, but Lamar’s top spot has raised some eyebrows. One user tweeted, “Genuinely so confused, pop? I thought he was rap,” highlighting the surprise of his placement in the pop category.

While some fans have congratulated Lamar for his achievement, others have questioned the decision. One supporter wrote, “Well-deserved! Kendrick Lamar continues to redefine music and push boundaries. His artistry and influence are unmatched, making this recognition well-earned.”

However, another fan expressed discomfort about a male rapper being named the greatest pop star, stating, “He definitely deserved it but it almost feels weird to have a male rapper named the greatest pop star (and yes, I know what ‘pop star’ technically means).”

Others voiced more critical views, with one commenter accusing Billboard of misogyny, saying, “In a year where Taylor and Sabrina broke every single record and sold out venues, this seems highly misogynistic. Do better, Billboard!” Some also questioned the fairness of the ranking, with another person remarking, “So with all of these rankings, Billboard confirms that no matter how big you are, no matter what records you break, if that check is big enough you are #1.”

Kendrick Lamar’s 2024 career highlights include several successful collaborations. He started the year with Metro Boomin and Future on the album ‘We Don’t Trust You’, which featured the track “Like That” and sparked a public feud with Drake. Lamar followed up with “Euphoria” and “Not Like Us,” the latter of which ended his side of the feud. His sixth studio album, ‘GNX’, was released in November 2024, and it received widespread attention.

Looking ahead, Lamar will tour alongside SZA in 2025 on the ‘Grand National Tour’, set to run from April 19 to June 18, 2025, across the U.S. and Canada.
