Ibadan Stampede: Protesters Want Hamzat Freed (Video)
By Benjamin Abioye
Supporters of Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat protest in Ibadan, demanding his release after his arrest over a deadly stampede at a children’s event.
The streets of Ibadan were flooded with passionate supporters of popular radio presenter Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat who were demanding his release over the stampede at a funfair organised for children last week.
This outcry follows his continued detention in connection with the tragic stampede at a children’s funfair that claimed the lives of at least 36 children. Hamzat, along with the event organizer Queen Naomi and others, is facing murder charges related to the incident.
In a viral video, protesters, mostly women with a few men, can be seen chanting fervently, “Free Oriyomi Hamzat!” They expressed their anger and frustration, with many saying, “He was only trying to provide for the needy.” Others added, “He’s a friend of the people who helps. Please release Oriyomi for us!”
Some protesters were not only advocating for Hamzat but also for Queen Naomi, with one saying, “They wanted to help, not harm. Please release them.” These supporters believe that both Hamzat and Naomi had good intentions but were caught up in an unfortunate tragedy.
The stampede occurred when over 7,500 people showed up for an event meant for just 5,000 children. As the crowd grew out of control, security measures failed to keep up, resulting in the devastating loss of life. Hamzat, who was at the scene, is seen in footage trying to help victims and manage the situation.
Despite his efforts, his arrest has sparked criticism, with supporters insisting he’s been unfairly implicated. As the case unfolds, they continue to demand justice and Hamzat’s release, believing his detention is unjustified.
