Police Disregarding Bail Order On Speed Darlington – Adeyanju
Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has criticized the continued detention of rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, despite a Federal High Court order in Abuja granting him bail on Monday, December 23.
Speed Darlington has been in police custody since November 27, after being re-arrested by the police in Owerri, Imo State. His initial arrest in October was reportedly tied to a petition filed by fellow artiste Burna Boy.
The court had granted the rapper unconditional bail, requiring his legal team to present the court order to the police legal department for processing. The order was then to be forwarded to the Force Investigation Department (FID), where Speed Darlington is being held, for his release.
However, even after submitting all necessary documents, the police have not complied with the court’s directive. This has raised concerns about the disregard for judicial authority.
In a statement shared on his X account, Adeyanju expressed his frustration, saying, “The Nigerian Police have refused to release Speed Darlington a.k.a AKPI despite the explicit order of the Federal High Court to do so. This is the highest form of disrespect to the judiciary.”
