Bauchi Governor Slams Tinubu’s Tax Reforms As Anti-North
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has criticized the tax reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing them as unfair to the northern region and a potential threat to Nigeria’s unity.
He made these remarks during a visit from the Christian community in Bauchi State at the Government House as part of their annual Christmas homage.
The governor argued that the tax reforms appear to benefit certain parts of the country while leaving the North disadvantaged. He called on the Federal Government to reconsider these policies, ensuring they address the needs of all Nigerians.
“We are facing serious problems in this country,” he said. “Hunger is everywhere, and the masses are suffering. This tax reform is not only anti-North but also a threat to the unity of our country.”
Governor Mohammed warned that ignoring public concerns could lead to unrest. “The government must listen to the people,” he said. “This is a democracy, not a dictatorship or an oligarchy. Policies should never be imposed on the people without considering their welfare. If you ignore the cries of the people, you are inviting anarchy.”
He also questioned how northern states could sustain their economies under these reforms. “How do you expect us to pay salaries and build roads when you are taking away our revenue sources? This is unacceptable,” he added.
The governor emphasized that no leader should feel too proud to revise policies that are unpopular with the public. “If something is not popular with the people, change it. This is not about religion or tribe; it is about fairness, justice, and the unity of Nigeria,” he said.
Addressing the Christian community, Governor Mohammed expressed gratitude for their continued support. “I have always enjoyed the backing of my Christian brothers and sisters, even from my days in the ANPP. You believed in me despite my limitations, and I appreciate that. Whatever I do for you, it is because you deserve it,” he concluded.
