ECOWAS Backs Tinubu Against Niger Republic

The Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) has firmly rejected allegations by Niger accusing Nigeria and other member states of sponsoring terrorism.

In a statement released on December 26, 2024, the ECOWAS regional body expressed deep concern over such claims by Niger against Nigeria and President Bola Tinubu, which it described as baseless and lacking evidence.

The ECOWAS Commission highlighted Nigeria’s longstanding role in promoting peace and security across the West African subregion and the African continent. It emphasized the success of Nigeria-led initiatives, such as the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), in combating terrorism and ensuring regional stability.

“Such a generous and magnanimous country cannot be labeled a state sponsor of terrorism,” the statement read, refuting the allegations against Nigeria.

ECOWAS also called on all states in the region to prioritize constructive dialogue and avoid making unsubstantiated claims that could undermine efforts toward regional harmony and development.

The Commission reiterated its support for Nigeria and other member states, urging stakeholders to focus on collaborative solutions to the challenges facing the subregion.

GWG.ng reports that the accusation against Nigeria have been described as lacking in evidence and frivolous by observers, a fact now given credence by ECOWAS.
