The Kano State government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has ordered the closure of the popular Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market in the Garun Mallam Local Government Area.

This decision was made following reports that the market had become a hub for immoral activities, including prostitution, adultery, and homosexuality.

The local council’s authorities took action after learning that youths and married women were involved in these activities within the market.

In response, Aminu Kadawa, the chairman of the local government, confirmed that all market occupants were given a seven-day notice to vacate the premises, or face legal consequences. He stated, “Looking at how the market has become a centre for prostitution and other immoral activities contrary to the purpose of the market, it has to be closed indefinitely to restore sanity.”

Aisha Saji, the State Commissioner for Tourism and Management, supported the government’s decision. She recalled her time as Commissioner for Women Affairs, when she led a raid at the same market. During that raid, 43 individuals, including 34 females and 9 males aged 15 to 18, were arrested for prostitution and the illegal sale of alcohol. She revealed that 14 of those arrested were HIV-positive, with 10 aware of their status and 4 unaware. The arrested individuals were from Kano and other states, including Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, and Taraba.

Saji further noted that during her tenure, she had proposed demolishing the market to make way for a skills development center to tackle unemployment in the area. She added, “This closure should not just mark the end of immoral activities but also serve as a stepping stone for development. Establishing a skills development institution in this area will not only curb unemployment but also equip our youths with sustainable means of livelihood.”
