IYC Raises Alarm Over Attacks On Ijaw Communities in Akwa Ibom
The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), the main group representing Ijaw youths, has raised concerns over repeated attacks on Ijaw communities in Akwa Ibom State.
According to the IYC spokesperson, Binebai Princewill, these attacks have caused injuries and property damage worth millions of naira.
The council highlighted a specific incident on February 26, 2024, when militants from Eket reportedly blocked the only road to Ibeno, sparking violent clashes that led to deaths and widespread destruction. Another attack occurred on November 10, 2024, in Inua Eyet Ikot 11, Ibeno Local Council, where militants were accused of damaging property, including a government-built health center.
Princewill attributed the escalation of these attacks to attempts by former Governor Emmanuel Udom to remap Ijaw territories, describing it as a violation of Ijaw rights and an effort to annex ancestral lands. He warned, “These actions threaten the peace, existence, and survival of Ijaw people in Akwa Ibom.”
He added, “We cannot tolerate these provocations and attacks. The Ijaw people will not allow any encroachment on our lands by the government or neighboring groups. While we advocate for peace, we are ready to defend ourselves if necessary.”
The IYC called on the government to address the activities of Eket militants urgently. Princewill emphasized, “An attack on one Ijaw person is an attack on all. If the government does not act decisively, we will have no option but to protect ourselves.”
