NLC Gives Police Deadline To Vacate Edo Secretariat

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given the Edo State government and the state Commissioner of Police a 14-day ultimatum to vacate the NLC’s state secretariat. The NEC stated that failure to comply would result in legal action.

This ultimatum was issued in a communiqué released after the NEC meeting held in Owerri, where the national president, Comrade Joe Ajaero, presided. The communiqué strongly condemned the actions of the Edo State government and the police, accusing them of unlawfully entering the NLC secretariat, removing items, and attempting to impose an illegitimate leadership on the workers.

The statement read, “The NEC strongly condemned the actions of the police and the governor of Edo State in orchestrating an invasion of the NLC state secretariat. This brazen act of impunity included the ransacking of properties and the unlawful removal of items, all in a bid to impose an illegitimate leadership on the workers.”

The NEC demanded that by January 8, 2025, the Edo State government and the police vacate the secretariat, return all confiscated properties, and refrain from interfering with the activities of the NLC. The communiqué warned that if the demands were not met, the NLC would take “unprecedented measures” to protect workers’ and trade union rights.

Comrade Odion Olaye, the state chairman of the NLC, also addressed the issue. He claimed to have evidence of the invasion and stated that the intention behind it was to remove him from his position as chairman. Olaye emphasized that he is still the legitimate chairman of the NLC in Edo State, as his tenure runs until March 2027.

“I was elected on 7th March, 2023, and my first tenure will be elapsing on 6th March 2027. NLC is an organized body. It is a body with a recognized authority. You can’t just come from nowhere and say you are now the chairman of the union when you are not elected,” Olaye stated.

He also mentioned that he had officially complained to the national leadership of the NLC and other affiliated bodies, who have warned those attempting to disrupt the union’s leadership to stop.
