Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has praised the late U.S. President Jimmy Carter for his deep understanding of power, even as he shared his unique experiences of the deceased’s humility. Obasanjo emphasized that Carter was not only aware of power but also understood its true purpose.

According to Obasanjo, Carter demonstrated that power is not about constantly using it, but about knowing when not to use it. He likened this approach to not using a hammer to kill an ant. “The power lies in people knowing it is there and you not using it,” Obasanjo stated.

Obasanjo highlighted Jimmy Carter’s significant role in resolving the Israel-Egypt conflict, calling it one of his greatest accomplishments. He also noted Carter’s ability to understand complex issues, such as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. “When you read the book that Jimmy Carter wrote on the Palestinian-Israeli problem, he understood the problem. He understood the genesis, and he prescribed what I will call an equitable solution,” Obasanjo added.

Describing Jimmy Carter as a humble leader, Obasanjo shared an example from their personal experience. He recalled that when they traveled together on a mission for the Ford Foundation, Carter, despite being a former U.S. President, chose to fly in business class, as required by the Foundation’s policy and not a First Class as would have been expected of a former president.

“He was a great leader by any standard. Humility, his own was all written around him,” Obasanjo remarked.

After leaving office, Jimmy Carter dedicated his life to humanitarian work, civil rights, and promoting democracy. Obasanjo referred to him as “the Symbol of Power,” contrasting him with the modern perception of power as something often used aggressively. He noted that Carter was persistent in his advocacy for freedom and justice, and his approach to power was always grounded in fairness.

Reflecting on leadership lessons, Obasanjo urged leaders to manage their power responsibly. He explained that even after leaving office, leaders should continue to use their experience and connections to benefit the world. “Part of the problem of the world today is what I call deficit of leadership,” Obasanjo said, stressing the importance of leadership not just at the political level, but across all sectors. “The world we are living in, that we call a village, if anybody fails to play his part and his role in that village, that village will soon be spoiled,” he concluded.
