Okpebholo Overturns Another Obaseki Legacy
By Benjamin Abioye
Edo State University, Uzairue, has officially reverted to its original name, Edo University, Iyamho, after receiving approval from Governor Monday Okpebholo.
This change follows four years after the university’s name was altered by Okpebholo’s predecessor, Governor Godwin Obaseki, in 2020.
The renaming of the university to Edo State University, Uzairue by Obaseki was met with strong criticism, particularly from Adams Oshiomhole, the founder of the university. Oshiomhole had previously vowed to reverse the name change, stating, “no man can change it” and emphasizing, “everybody will write his own testimonial while on earth.”
The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Umar Ikhilor, confirmed that the name change is now official and that all relevant documentation will reflect the new name, effective immediately.
This decision marks a significant turning point for the institution, which was originally established in 2016 as Edo University, Iyamho, before being renamed in 2020 under Obaseki’s administration.
