Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt Reach Divorce Settlement After Years Of Legal Battle
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, once one of Hollywood’s most celebrated couples, have reportedly reached a settlement in their contentious divorce case after an eight-year legal battle.
Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, confirmed the divorce on Monday, describing it as a significant step in the long-standing proceedings.
Simon noted that Jolie filed for divorce over eight years ago and has since focused on healing and finding peace for her family. “This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over,” he stated.
The settlement, however, is yet to be finalized, as court approval is still required. Pitt’s attorney has yet to comment on the matter.
Jolie, 49, and Pitt, 61, were together for 12 years, two of which they spent as a married couple. They share six children, with their relationship unraveling publicly in 2016 after Jolie accused Pitt of abusive behavior during a private jet flight. Both the FBI and Los Angeles County authorities investigated the allegations and decided against taking action.
In 2019, a judge declared Jolie and Pitt legally single, but disputes over custody and asset division dragged on for years. A private judge initially granted Pitt equal custody, but Jolie successfully challenged his involvement due to an unreported conflict of interest. This decision reset the case, further prolonging the legal battle.
Over time, four of their six children reached adulthood, leaving only 16-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne under the custody agreement. Meanwhile, their daughter, formerly known as Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, legally removed Pitt’s name from hers earlier this year.
The couple’s legal entanglements extended beyond their children. Pitt filed a lawsuit alleging that Jolie had violated an agreement to sell her share of their French winery, Chateau Miraval, to him. Instead, Jolie sold her stake to the Stoli Group, prompting Pitt to call the move “vindictive” and accusing Jolie of damaging what he considered a personal retreat.
Jolie countered, claiming the deal broke down over Pitt’s insistence on a non-disclosure agreement that she said sought to silence her allegations of abuse.
Both stars have maintained a tight-lipped stance about their split. Pitt, in a 2017 GQ interview, admitted to struggling with alcohol at the time of the incident but has since become sober and undergone therapy. Jolie has refrained from public commentary, opting instead to pursue accountability through legal avenues.
Despite their tumultuous separation, Jolie and Pitt remain industry icons. Jolie, the Oscar-winning star of Girl, Interrupted, has directed films and returned to acting prominence with her portrayal of Maria Callas in Maria. Pitt, an Oscar-winning actor for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, has continued to thrive as both a producer and performer.
The settlement marks a pivotal moment in their legal journey, though its impact on ongoing disputes, such as the winery lawsuit, remains uncertain.
