Tax Reforms: NLC Disagrees With Tinubu
By Benjamin Abioye
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the immediate withdrawal of the proposed Tax Reform Bills submitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu.
The group emphasized the importance of involving all key stakeholders in discussions before passing such critical legislation. In a statement, the NLC also called on governments at every level to prioritize the welfare of citizens in the new year.
The NLC President, Joe Ajaero, stated, “The challenges we have faced as a people should inspire us to build a collective resolve to lift Nigeria out of underdevelopment. No external force will rescue us from economic hardship—it’s our determination that will move the nation forward.”
The NLC outlined citizens’ key expectations, including access to food, healthcare, housing, education, and security. The congress emphasized that governance must be inclusive and transparent, saying, “Policies must reflect transparency, honesty, and inclusivity, devoid of nepotism or forceful tactics.”
Addressing the tax bills, the NLC highlighted the need for wider acceptance and participation. “We call on the federal government to withdraw the current tax bills and involve all stakeholders in creating a national tax law that supports development,” the statement read. The congress plans to hold a national dialogue in Ibadan this month to deliberate on the matter.
On industrial relations, the NLC stressed the importance of maintaining peace and respecting agreements with trade unions. “The government must stop the increasing use of violence in engagements with workers and unions. Such actions only create industrial disharmony,” the group warned.
The NLC also insisted that the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act must be implemented from the start of the year. It further called for a wage review to help workers cope with the current economic challenges. “When workers’ incomes can meet basic needs, they’ll be more committed to their jobs, boosting national productivity,” the statement added.
As the nation enters 2025, the NLC urged everyone to unite for a better Nigeria, stating, “Let us ensure a country where workers’ welfare and security are prioritized. Together, through determination and collective effort, we can transform Nigeria into a nation of progress, inclusion, and shared prosperity.”
