Alleged Chicken Theft: Man Released From Death Sentence Kneels Before Adeleke (Video)
By Benjamin Abioye
A man from Osun State, Segun Olowookere, who came to renown after it was reported in the media that he was sentenced to death for stealing a chicken has met with Governor Ademola Adeleke. This meeting followed Olowookere’s release from Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison after being granted a pardon by the governor.
A video shared online showed Olowookere and his mother approaching Governor Adeleke at an event, where they knelt to express their gratitude. The scene was emotional, reflecting the family’s relief and appreciation for the governor’s intervention.
Olowookere was among 53 individuals pardoned by Governor Adeleke on December 26. His case had drawn widespread attention due to the harsh sentence he received in 2010 for stealing a chicken and eggs.
The story came to light after a viral interview conducted by Biola Adebayo, during which Olowookere’s parents shared their ordeal. His father, Olanrewaju, alleged that the police wrongfully arrested his son and demanded money for his release. The family’s inability to meet the financial demand led to Olowookere’s prolonged imprisonment and the severe sentence.
Governor Adeleke’s pardon has been widely discussed, with many lauding the act as a step toward addressing injustices in the judicial system.
GWG.ng, however, reports that there have been claims that Olowookere was actually sentenced to death for armed robbery.
