Controversy As Popular Nigerian Musician Smokes Hemp In Front Of Gov
By Gideon Ayeni
Nigerian artiste Seyi Vibez has set the social media on frenzy following his appearance at a Lagos event where he donned full army regalia and openly smoked cannabis in the presence of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The incident involving Seyi Vibez which was captured in a photo circulating on social media, raised eyebrows and drew mixed reactions after an X (formerly Twitter) user commented on the perceived double standard in the enforcement of Nigerian laws.
The user wrote: “Seyi Vibez wore full Army regalia and still smoked cannabis in public, which is a crime in Lagos State. He did all this in front of Lagos Governor Gov Sanwo Olu. No reprimands. No consequences. Just smiles and thumbs up. In Nigeria, rules are for the poor or nameless populace.”
While some netizens condemned the artiste’s actions, others defended him, arguing that artistes are often permitted to use such attire for entertainment purposes.
Read some netizens’ reactions to the trending photo below;
@tblaq: Camouflage is allowed for entertainers.
@waxdigitals: Please let him be , the Governor was there to entertain himself not to be a teacher or police man
@fidel: It’s really crazy. Artistes like these should never reflect the face of any brand or a responsible government that preaches morality in society. Organisers should vet artists who they invite to perform at their events.
@idiongo: In Obodo Nigeria, laws are like cobwebs, too weak to hold the powerful, but strong enough to trap the powerless. When leaders smile at lawlessness, justice becomes a joke!
@swaggs: Army Uniform is cool for Entertainment purposes, but the other one, na between him and the Governor. Let’s focus !
This controversy also reignited discussions about the Nigerian Army’s strict rules prohibiting civilians from wearing their camouflage. Traditionally, individuals caught violating this rule are punished.
As videos of the performance circulate online, the public remains divided. Some insist that Seyi Vibez’s actions set a poor example, while others see it as a harmless act of artistic expression. Despite the outcry, there has been no official statement or action taken by the Lagos State government or the Nigerian Army regarding the incident.
