The CEO and Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Aminu Maida, has assured that the Commission will build on its successes from 2024 in the new year.

He emphasized that the NCC plans to introduce important initiatives in 2025 to improve its work.

Maida mentioned that the NCC would be providing coverage maps from crowd-sourced data by the end of the year. He clarified that these maps would not be based on simulated data but on actual performance data from mobile network users. “We are going to provide coverage maps towards the end of the year, from crowd-sourced data. This is not going to be simulated data. It is going to be actual performance data, which will show you what is the best network in your area,” he said.

The coverage maps are aimed at helping consumers identify the best mobile network in their area without relying on others’ opinions. “No longer will you need to ask the man or woman nearest to you. You can actually come to the NCC’s website and look at the data for yourself,” Maida added.

This announcement was shared through a series of tweets on the official X handle of Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, on Thursday. Maida expressed optimism for 2025, saying, “We are going to build on the small gains we made in 2024. Now that we have laid some of the necessary foundations, we are going to see a lot more transparency to help drive competition and service delivery amongst operators.”

In 2024, one of the NCC’s key accomplishments was the completion of the National Identification Number (NIN) and SIM linkage policy, as well as the designation of its infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) through a Presidential Order issued on November 6.
