Portable Stopped From Concert After Security Fears
By Benjamin Abioye
Controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, was notably absent from a concert organized by Fuji musician Alhaji Taye Currency in Ibadan, Oyo State, due to security concerns.
His absence sparked discussions, especially given his earlier remarks about the city and its residents.
Portable had stirred controversy last year when he criticized Ibadan residents in a viral video, claiming their homes lacked modern roofing materials like Plaster-of-Paris (POP), which he said were common in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria. The comments offended many in Oyo State, prompting public outrage on social media. Despite issuing an apology and confirming his invitation to the concert, fans continued to advise him against attending.
Reports revealed that Portable arrived in Ibadan and stayed in a hotel near the concert venue at the Palms Mall. However, he could not take the stage due to mounting security concerns. According to Jarule Entertainment, the organizers of the event, the decision to exclude Portable from performing was made after careful evaluation of the risks.
Speaking on the issue, Jarule Entertainment explained that while adequate security was provided at the venue, there were credible reports of individuals inquiring about Portable’s location. “We spoke to the commissioner of police and even signed an undertaking. Although there was security at the venue, we received reports of people looking for Portable’s whereabouts in Ibadan,” a representative said.
The concert organizers prioritized safety above all else. “As a professional management outfit, security comes first. This is why we decided to keep him away from the event entirely. It’s unfortunate, but we hope the issue is resolved soon,” Jarule added.
Portable was the only artist on the lineup unable to perform at the concert. While fans expressed disappointment, the decision highlights the importance of ensuring safety in high-profile events, particularly amid controversies.
