Why Do Christians Struggle Financially

Many people wonder why Christians face financial struggles—or struggles of any kind—when they are believed to be closer to God through their faith in Jesus Christ. Shouldn’t being a Christian mean living a life free of hardships? Yet, this assumption is far from the truth. Even Jesus himself warned against expecting a peaceful life simply because of faith.

In Matthew 10:34, Jesus said, “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” This statement reminds us that challenges, conflicts, and struggles are part of the Christian journey.

Christians face difficulties not only in the area of finances but in many other aspects of life. Let’s explore why this happens, what Christians can do about it, and how they can grow stronger through these experiences.

Financial Struggles: A Complex Issue
First, not every financial problem a Christian faces is an attack from the enemy. Many struggles are the result of poor financial habits—like overspending, impulse buying, or living beyond one’s means. These self-inflicted problems remind us that stewardship is a responsibility. God gives us resources, but how we manage them often determines the outcomes we face.

At the same time, not all financial challenges are our fault. Let’s consider three key reasons Christians may struggle financially:

1. Spiritual Warfare
The Bible teaches that there is an unseen battle happening in the spiritual realm. As Ephesians 6:12 says, “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
The enemy often targets finances because money affects our daily lives and our ability to support God’s work. Sometimes, despite budgeting wisely, giving generously, and saving consistently, things still fall apart. These struggles may be the result of spiritual attacks designed to either leave us broken and ineffective or make us so rich that we become self-reliant and forget God.

2. The Lord’s Discipline

God disciplines His children out of love. Hebrews 12:6 says, “The Lord disciplines those He loves, and He punishes everyone He accepts as His child.” If a Christian’s financial life is in disarray, it may be God’s way of calling attention to areas that need correction. This isn’t punishment for the sake of punishment; it’s a form of loving guidance meant to help believers realign with His will.

3. Preparation for a Greater Purpose
Sometimes, financial struggles are part of a bigger plan. Consider Joseph, who endured slavery and imprisonment, or Job, who lost everything yet remained faithful. In both cases, God used their struggles to prepare them for greater blessings and responsibilities. Financial struggles can be God’s way of refining character, teaching patience, or building trust in His provision.

Beyond Finances: Struggles in Other Areas
Christians also face emotional, relational, and spiritual struggles. These challenges remind us that faith does not guarantee a life free from pain but offers the strength and guidance to overcome it. Jesus didn’t promise His followers a comfortable life; He promised the opposite: “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33).

What Should Christians Do?
Faith is vital, but it is not enough to simply pray and wait for God to solve every problem. As believers, we are called to act, seek wisdom, and grow spiritually. Here’s how Christians can approach their struggles more effectively:

1. Be Self-Aware
Understand how the world operates. Learn the principles of money management, relationships, and emotional well-being. Be mindful of your actions and how they contribute to your struggles.

2. Take Action
Faith without works is dead (James 2:26). While prayer is essential, it must be accompanied by proactive steps. Learn to budget, explore opportunities, network with others, and take calculated risks.

3. Seek Wisdom
The Bible emphasizes the value of wisdom: “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” (Proverbs 4:7). This means seeking knowledge not only from Scripture but also from practical sources like financial advisors, mentors, and trusted friends.

4. Cultivate Spiritual Consciousness
Spiritual growth is not passive. Engage in practices like meditation, fasting, and consistent Bible study. These disciplines help you stay grounded and aware of God’s purpose even during hardships.

Conclusion
Struggles—financial or otherwise—are not evidence of God’s absence but opportunities for growth. They challenge us to depend on Him, learn wisdom, and take meaningful steps toward change. Christians are called to live in faith while also being diligent and proactive in navigating life’s challenges. By balancing prayer with purposeful action, we can overcome struggles and fulfill God’s plan for our lives.

Remember, hardships may come, but they are not the end. They are stepping stones to something greater. As Romans 8:28 assures us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
