Social media was on Monday awash with comments on the fate of Oyo State governorship hopeful, Amofin Beulah Adeoye, after Betty, widow of former Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu was alleged to have put a spanner in the wheel of Yoruba politicians with non-Yoruba wives.

Amofin Beulah Adeoye, a leading aspirant to succeed Seyi Makinde as governor of Oyo State has had his governorship aspiration put on new focus following revulsions against Betty Akeredolu whose dignity and comport has put Yoruba politicians with foreign wives on the spot.

The conversation gained momentum shortly after Adeoye joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) a few weeks ago, sparking theories about his next political move.

However, what has become a hot topic of discussion is the resurfacing of an old post by Betty Akeredolu, the widow of former Ondo State Governor, late Rotimi Akeredolu, on X (formerly Twitter).

In her controversial post, Betty wrote:
“I’m not Yoruba nah! That’s why we are different. Being married to a Yoruba man doesn’t make me Yoruba. You want me to fake it? I can’t! Proudly Igbo! 💪 Proudly different 💪!!!”

This statement has drawn widespread criticism, with netizens pointing to her remarks as a reason to question the political viability of Yoruba politicians married to non-Yoruba spouses. The debate shifted toward Adeoye, whose wife is also reportedly of Igbo descent. Critics argue that, much like Betty’s perceived detachment from Ondo State’s cultural identity, Adeoye’s wife might face similar scrutiny, potentially affecting his political prospects in Oyo State.

One social media user wrote;
“Oyo people are too smart for all this nonsense. I’m sure they can see how Betty Akeredolu behaved as Ondo first lady. Their people on social media too can see her thought process and that of Moghalu’s wife too”.

Another added, Beulah Adeola is married to Ifeoma, Only a conqured Yoruba man marries an IBO woman & names his children Andela, Anaya, or Anayo. you’re going nowheree near the Oyo State government house. Any Yoruba man who does not regard Yoruba women in marriage can’t rule any Yoruba state.

Even, Betty Akeredolu would laugh at your nonsense tweet.

Amid this conversation, comparisons have been drawn to Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, who is married to a woman of mixed Igbo and Lebanese heritage. Speculations suggest that Seyi Tinubu may also be considering a gubernatorial run in Lagos State in 2027. However, the reactions to his marriage have been less contentious, further fueling debates about gender and cultural dynamics in political partnerships.

As the discourse rages on, Adeoye has yet to make any public declaration about his 2027 ambitions. Whether these speculations will shape his political journey remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—social media users will continue to scrutinize the personal lives of political figures as part of their fitness for public office.
