Samuel Chukwueze Becomes First Nigerian To Win Major Trophies In Spain, Italy
By Benjamin Abioye
Samuel Chukwueze, the Super Eagles winger, has etched his name in Nigerian football history by becoming the first Nigerian player to win major trophies in both Spain and Italy. He accomplished this feat after AC Milan triumphed 3-2 over Inter Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana on Monday night in Saudi Arabia.
Despite being sidelined by a hamstring injury sustained during Milan’s 1-1 draw against Roma earlier this month, Chukwueze was still registered for the match. His inclusion allowed him to join an exclusive group of Nigerian players who have won the prestigious Italian Super Cup.
Chukwueze’s latest triumph adds to his remarkable achievements, including his role in Villarreal’s 2021 UEFA Europa League victory. He played a key part in their European campaign, finishing as the competition’s top assist provider. This victory was particularly significant as it helped Villarreal secure their first major trophy in the club’s 98-year history.
His accomplishment marks a significant milestone for Nigerian footballers in European competitions, surpassing the careers of other celebrated Nigerian players who, despite their successes, never managed to win major trophies in both Spain and Italy.
Chukwueze’s journey to success began at Diamond Academy in Umuahia before moving to Villarreal in 2017. His development in Spain made him one of Europe’s most promising wingers, leading to his €20 million transfer to AC Milan. Although his recent injury, confirmed as a lesion of the left femoral biceps, presents a challenge in his efforts to establish himself at Milan, it does not overshadow his significant achievements.
In addition to his individual successes, Chukwueze now joins an elite group of Nigerian players who have won the Supercoppa Italiana, following in the footsteps of notable figures such as Obafemi Martins, Joel Obi, and Obinna Nsofor, who all celebrated victories with Inter Milan.
