By Benjamin Abioye
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.
The announcement was made in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, on Friday.
Oyelade explained that the selection of Owoade followed detailed consultations and traditional rites conducted by the Oyomesi, the kingmakers of Oyo. “Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade has been recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo after thorough consultations and divinations,” he stated.
Ademola Ojo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, highlighted that the appointment resolves disputes that emerged after the passing of the previous Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who died on April 22, 2022. “This appointment concludes the socio-legal controversies that have persisted since the demise of Oba Adeyemi. We call on the people of Oyo State to support the new Alaafin and join in celebrating this historic event,” Ojo remarked.
Oyelade expressed optimism about the new monarch’s reign, stating that it is expected to bring growth and unity to the Oyo Kingdom. “We trust that his reign will foster progress and harmony in Oyo and uphold the rich legacy of the Alaafin institution,” he said.
The people of Oyo State have been urged to rally around the new Alaafin as he begins his leadership of the historic kingdom.
