Eight Tokyo university students were attacked in a classroom by a woman wielding a hammer, but none of them required hospitalization, according to the university.

The assault occurred on Friday when a 22-year-old woman, who identified herself as South Korean, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault, as confirmed by Tokyo police.

Witnesses reported seeing students with blood on their heads, and public broadcaster NHK mentioned that the attack was believed to have been triggered by frustration over bullying, based on sources from the investigation.

A student who was present during the incident told TV Asahi, “The attacker suddenly began swinging a hammer in the classroom. Everyone was panicking. I was so scared at first that my hands were shaking.”

The university, Hosei University, issued a statement later that evening, confirming that the eight injured students received medical treatment but did not need to be hospitalized. “We will cooperate with police investigations and care for students and faculty shocked by the incident,” the statement read. The university also emphasized efforts to “ensure campus safety.”

Although violent crimes are relatively rare in Japan, where gun control laws are strict, incidents such as stabbings and shootings as the attack in the Tokyo University have occurred. In December, a junior high school student was stabbed, and another was injured at a McDonald’s restaurant in southwestern Japan. A man was arrested in connection with that attack. Additionally, in January 2022, three people were stabbed outside the University of Tokyo just before the nationwide college entrance exams.
