The Nigeria Police Force has issued a statement addressing the public outcry surrounding a viral video featuring a police officer assisting the Okoya brothers during a controversial money-spraying event.

The Police in the explanation affirmed that it had done its own duty of sanctioning its officer involved in the case and that it was left for other agencies responsible for investigating cases of naira abuse to their work. The police, however, refrained from naming the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the agency that has been in the lead in checking the abuse of the naira.

The video, which quickly went viral, sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the officer’s actions and the absence of consequences for the Okoya brothers, who were seen spraying naira notes at the event.

In a video statement, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, responded to the backlash and provided clarification on the police’s actions. “Good day, my name is Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force PRO. Today I just quickly want to speak to the issue of abuse of Naira concerning our police,” Adejobi began. “One of our policemen was with the Okoyas, and the video has gone viral.”

The police confirmed that the officer involved had been identified, arrested, and placed under detention, with disciplinary action set to follow. ACP Adejobi emphasized that the police took immediate action, saying, “The police came out yesterday. We actually condemned the acts and we announced that the policeman has been identified, arrested, detained, and subjected to disciplinary action.”

Despite the swift response from the police, Adejobi acknowledged that many people had expressed dissatisfaction, raising concerns about the police’s handling of the situation. “Many people are like raising eyebrows, attacking the police, dragging us up and down,” he said. “We have done what we should as a responsible institution.”

Addressing the broader issue, Adejobi clarified that the officer involved was not initially attached to the Okoya brothers, and his involvement was not appropriate. “The first instance, the policeman was not attached to them,” he said. “No, the policeman was attached to the company. So how did the policeman leave the company, the Eleganza company, to come to that location to join them in filming?”

He went on to highlight the unethical nature of the officer’s behavior, particularly carrying money while in uniform. “he was even so low to carry bills and bundles of money for them on uniform,” Adejobi explained. “So it’s unethical, it’s unprofessional, and the police has acted accordingly.”

In the video, ACP Adejobi stressed that the officer had acted independently and inappropriately. “He was never attached to them,” he said. “He left his post, went with them to wherever they had the shot, and it was captured on the video. It’s quite unfortunate.”

While the police have acted against the officer, Adejobi acknowledged that many people were still questioning why the Okoya brothers had not been arrested or disciplined. “We have done what we should do, and I think all other relevant agencies concerned, all of them will do what they should because I’m sure they’re studying the matter,” he said.

He also responded to accusations of selective justice, reaffirming the police’s commitment to fairness. “It’s not a matter of selective justice. We have done what we should do, and we have taken the necessary action concerning the policeman that was captured in the viral video,” Adejobi stated.

Finally, ACP Adejobi appealed to the public to be objective in their assessment of the situation. “We want Nigerians to always understand us, to be on the same page with us,” he said. “If we have not done anything, you still be the same set of people who say the police are folding their arms, they are not doing anything. We have done now, you are still dragging us.”

In closing, Adejobi reassured the public that the case was being addressed thoroughly, stating, “I understand your plight, I understand your argument, but the fact is we need to be objective. Let us always address our issues objectively. The matter will be addressed accordingly.”
