Controversial show promoter Samson Balogun aka Sam Larry, a well-known associate of Nigerian musician Naira Marley, has come under fire following reactions to his alleged birthday celebration.

The controversy surrounding the late Nigerian singer Mohbad’s death rebounded to haunt Sam Larry on the occasion of his birthday and many Nigerians used the occasion to express their anger towards him.

A post on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) wished Sam Larry well on his birthday, saying, “Today is Sam Larry’s birthday, say a prayer for him❤️📿.” However, instead of prayers, many Nigerians used the opportunity to share harsh words, condemning him in relation to his alleged issues with the late musician, Mohbad.

One X user, @UtdQween, wrote, “May he meet Mohbad soon🙌,” a clear reference to the singer whose tragic death on September 12, 2023, has sparked national outrage.

Another user, @muheediva01, shared thoughts, saying, “He will not escape what is coming for him by the grace of God🙏🏽. He will reap what he sow in 100 folds.” Others followed suit, with @CyberHawk__ expressing a mixed sentiment: “Happy birthday Sam Larry if you are innocent may God bless you. If you are guilty, thunder fire you.”

Sam Larry’s name was initially associated with Mohbad’s death after the police named him alongside Naira Marley as persons of interest in the investigation. In the wake of the singer’s passing, Sam Larry and Marley were arrested and remanded in police custody, though they were released on bail in November 2023.

However, no specific indictment was raised against either of the two.

Since then, Sam Larry has faced a constant barrage of online backlash, with every public appearance or social media post bringing forth a wave of criticisms.

Even when Sam Larry was involved in an accident in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos, the incident was met with no sympathy from many Nigerians. Instead, the reactions were filled with scorn, with one user commenting, “I know my God will complete it soon. He is not a God of half job,” while another said, “I wish you a slow recovery.” His controversial image continued as he attended Hajj in Mecca, with a comment from @tonia.gram_ stating, “Sam Larry thinks Nigerians have forgiven him. Nice outfit by the way, help us put cotton wool in your nostrils.”

In addition to the criticism, Sam Larry has faced the spread of false information, including rumors about his alleged death in a motor accident in February 2024. The rumor led him to address the situation publicly on Instagram, where he wrote, “I, Sam Larry, want to use this platform to debunk the false information spreading online about my involvement in an accident. Both my family and I are perfectly fine. We spent the day together and even went out for dinner, returning home safely.”

The controversy surrounding Sam Larry is intertwined with the tragic story of Mohbad, whose mother has publicly stated that her son never found peace due to the actions of Sam Larry and Naira Marley. She revealed, “Mohbad did not know peace throughout his lifetime. He was always going from one problem to another in the hands of Naira Marley and Sam Larry.”

Sam Larry’s association with the death of Mohbad remains an ongoing issue, and despite the police investigation and his eventual release, the public’s perception of him continues to be shaped by the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s untimely passing.
