What To Know About Mbata, New Ohanaeze President, And His Links With Wike

Senator John Azuta-Mbata was elected new Ohaneze Ndigbo on Friday after the expiration of the tenure of his predecessor from Imo State returning to the limelight a political prodigy many younger Nigerians may not know.

Known for his commitment to public service, Azuta-Mbata, ex- senator from Rivers State  spent his career advocating for the welfare of the people using different platforms.

 Here are four things to know about Senator John Azuta-Mbata.

Early political life

  The journey to political  stardom started when he was elected as Senator representing Rivers East constituency under the platform of People’s Democratic Party, between May 2 1999 and served for two terms. Many Nigerians also do not know that Senator Mbata was the political godfather who helped Nyesom Wike become chairman of Ikwere Local Government in 1999.

GWG.ng reports that Wike once named him as the nearest to a political godfather he has had, though Mbata has now firmly planted himself as a defender of the Governor Sim Fubara cause in Rivers State.

Academic record

  Mbata holds a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Ibadan that prepared him deeply for governance and public policy.

Legislative achievement

  During this tenure in the Senate,Azuta played key roles in several committees including Defense, Works and Housing and Women Affairs. He served as a Vice chairman of the finance and Appropriation committee.

Contribution to education

  Beyond legislative acumen the new Ohaneze Ndigbo had shown interest in education as a member of the governing Board of Rivers State University of science and technology.

  In 2005, Azuta-Mbata faced allegations of involvement in the education budget scandal, but was acquited by Court of Appeal in Abuja.
