Obasa’s Impeachment: Sanwo-Olu Opens Up
By Benjamin Abioye
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has dismissed any claims linking him to the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
GWG.ng reports that Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, following accusations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, corruption, and financial mismanagement. The impeachment was supported by 32 members of the Assembly.
Reacting to the incident, Governor Sanwo-Olu clarified that the matter was entirely a legislative issue. He stressed the independence of the Assembly in managing its internal affairs without any interference from the executive branch.
Speaking through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu stated, “It is purely a legislative matter, and the Assembly handled it the best way they could. It has nothing to do with the governor.” He also highlighted the importance of the separation of powers outlined in the constitution, which defines the roles of the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary.
Obasa, who served as Speaker since 2015, faced impeachment after Assembly members accused him of various violations, including financial mismanagement. Reports indicate that these allegations caused significant tensions between him and his colleagues.
Following Obasa’s removal, Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker, was unanimously chosen as the new Speaker. Her election marks a historic moment, as she becomes the first female Speaker in the history of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
While Governor Sanwo-Olu refrained from commenting on Obasa’s tenure, sources suggest he is hopeful for a more collaborative relationship with the new leadership of the Assembly.
