The newly appointed coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, has shared his bold vision to position Nigeria among the world’s football elites, starting with securing a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

GWG.ng reports that Chelle was officially introduced during a ceremony at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Monday, January 13.

Chelle, a former Mali international, who is now the 37th coach of the Super Eagles, signed a two-year contract, with an option for extension based on the team’s success in qualifying for the World Cup, which will be held across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) stressed the importance of this qualification, especially given the team’s current struggles in the qualifiers. Nigeria currently stands fifth in Group C, with only three points from four games—three draws and one loss. For a chance to qualify, the team must win all six remaining matches and rely on favourable results from other teams.

During his unveiling, Chelle acknowledged the difficult road ahead to the World Cup but expressed confidence in his ability to rise to the challenge. Speaking about his role, he said, “To be a great coach, one must be willing to take risks and make sacrifices. I am determined to make my mark in history. My first step will be to connect with the players and foster a supportive environment. I hope that we will qualify for the World Cup.”

Chelle extended his gratitude to his agent, the NFF, the National Sports Commission, and the Nigerian people for trusting him with the role. Calling the appointment a tremendous honour, he said he was committed to delivering results.

He also discussed his plans for the team’s playing style, promising a focus on attacking football that would thrill fans. “Football revolves around scoring goals, and I am ready to work diligently with my assistants to achieve our ambition of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup,” he declared.

Chelle, now 47 years old, reflected on his admiration for the Super Eagles, which began in his youth. “Nigeria’s team transcends mere athletics for me. Growing up, they were my favourite team; I watched every World Cup game and even wore their jersey,” he said, adding a personal touch to his commitment.

With a clear objective to restore the Super Eagles’ global reputation, Chelle emphasized the need for discipline, hard work, and strategic planning. He promised to harness the talents of players both at home and abroad to create a strong and united team. “I will leverage the exceptional talents of our players, both domestically and abroad, to build a cohesive and formidable team that embodies the unity, strength, and excellence of Nigeria,” he shared in a social media post.

The journey ahead may be challenging, but Chelle appears ready to take it on with determination and optimism.
