A widow, Aisha Zubairu, has taken her father, Zubairu Surajo, to a Shari’a Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, seeking the court’s intervention to marry her long-time love, Aminu Saminu, against her father’s wishes.

Appearing before Judge Malam Kabir Muhammad on Tuesday, Zubairu, a widow argued that her right to choose her spouse should be upheld. She revealed that her father had previously forced her into marrying her late husband, a decision that ended her relationship with Saminu.

“Now, my father says I can marry anyone but not Saminu,” she lamented. “He even threatens legal action against any relative who helps me marry him.”

In defense, Surajo, represented by his counsel, Nasiru Abdullahi, cited unresolved grievances between his family and Saminu’s parents as the reason for his objection. He claimed that Saminu’s family had once dismissed his daughter as a potential bride due to her suitor’s perceived immaturity, forcing him to arrange her previous marriage out of shame.

While acknowledging the court’s authority, Surajo stated, “If the court decides to conduct the marriage, we will offer only our best wishes but no further support.”

The judge has ordered Surajo to appear in person at the next hearing, scheduled for January 29, before a final decision is made.
