Oyomesi to Makinde

The Oyomesi, the traditional council of kingmakers in Oyo, have expressed deep concern over recent public remarks made by Governor Seyi Makinde.

Governor Makinde’s statements accusing the Oyomesi of impropriety came in the wake of his appointment of Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, which disregarded the kingmaker’s initial recommendation of Prince Lukman Gbadegesin.

Through their legal representative, Adekunle Sobaloju SAN, the Oyomesi criticized the governor’s comments, stating that they tarnished the integrity of the council members. They issued a letter urging the governor to present any allegations against them in court instead of engaging in what they described as a “campaign of calumny” against their reputation.

The Oyomesi emphasized their dedication to preserving the traditions and customs of the Oyo Kingdom, adding that the governor’s public criticisms were unwarranted and unbecoming of his office. The letter stated, “We recognize Your Excellency’s right to defend your actions in court, given the ongoing legal challenge to your recent decision. However, we respectfully remind Your Excellency that the court is the appropriate forum for presenting evidence and arguments.”

The Oyomesi expressed their disappointment, noting their efforts to avoid public disputes with Governor Makinde. They further stated, “It is disheartening that Your Excellency continues to make public statements that cast aspersions on their integrity. We urge Your Excellency to refrain from resorting to a trial by media or the court of public opinion to justify the state’s recent actions under your command.”

The Oyomesi concluded by warning that public defamation of their character by Makinde undermines not only their reputation but also the judicial process. They reiterated their call for any evidence to be brought before the courts, where it can be addressed properly.
