The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is in deep sorrow following the death of its councillorship candidate for Ward 01, Oloba/Atapara, Ede North, Dauda Nurein.

Nurein, who had been preparing for the February 22 local government elections, passed away on Tuesday after a brief illness. His sudden demise has shocked his family, friends, and political associates.

GWG.ng reports that Nurein had been especially favoured to win the election given his affiliation to the PDP, the party in control of the state. According to Nigerian political culture the party in the state normally sweeps the local government elections in the state.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Osun Governor on the Bureau of Social Services, Akintunde Bello Sheriff, announced the tragic news in an emotional Facebook post.

Expressing his grief, Sheriff wrote, “The councillor waiting to be elected in my ward said goodbye to the world this afternoon (Tuesday) after a very brief illness. We grew up together in the same neighborhood, but now Nurein is gone. The last time we all gathered was during New Year celebrations at our Brother Olugbenga Akanfe’s house. It never crossed my mind that Nurein’s time on earth was ending. This is heartbreaking news for the PDP family in Ede North. May God protect the rest of us. Rest in peace, Olobe Dauda Nurein. May Allah accept your soul.”

The PDP spokesperson in Osun, Oladele Bamiji, also shared his condolences, expressing deep sadness over the loss. He stated, “Nurein was truly loved. The overwhelming emotions from those who knew him are a testament to that. May God grant him eternal rest and give comfort to his family during this difficult time.”

The death of Nurein has left a significant void within the PDP and among his community in Ede North.
