The Federal Government has responded to recent comments made by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II regarding economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

At a public event in Lagos, the Emir acknowledged the reforms but mentioned he had chosen “not to help the government” by endorsing them.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the government defended its policies, stating that Nigeria is at a pivotal moment requiring bold actions to address longstanding economic issues. The statement outlined key achievements, including the unification of exchange rates, the removal of fuel subsidies, and reducing the debt service-to-revenue ratio.

“These reforms are not being undertaken because they are simple but because they are necessary for the nation’s long-term stability and prosperity,” the statement said. It further noted that global organizations, including the World Bank, have projected positive economic growth for Nigeria, indicating the country is on a recovery path.

The government expressed disappointment at Emir Sanusi’s reluctance to support these efforts, despite his expertise in economic matters. “It is disheartening that reforms widely acknowledged as crucial by global experts—and Emir Sanusi II himself—are now being criticized due to shifting loyalties,” the statement read.

Calling for unity, the government urged leaders, including Emir Sanusi, to focus on the nation’s collective well-being rather than personal or partisan interests. “Rebuilding Nigeria demands unity, focus, and sacrifices from all stakeholders,” it emphasized. The statement also encouraged leaders to avoid rhetoric that could erode public trust.

The administration reaffirmed its commitment to fostering an inclusive and sustainable economy. It pledged to remain open to dialogue with stakeholders while continuing to implement policies aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.

“Let this moment go down in history as a turning point when leaders and citizens prioritized the nation’s future above personal gains,” the statement concluded.
