The Federal Government has dismissed proposals for a 100% telecom tariff hike despite mounting operational costs faced by service providers.

Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, made this clear during an interview on Politics Today with Channels Television.

Tijani acknowledged the challenges posed by inflation, naira devaluation, and rising expenses in the telecom sector but stated that a full-scale tariff hike would be excessive.

“We have made it clear that a 100% increase is off the table,” Tijani emphasized. “Although operators believe such a jump is necessary for stability, we are committed to protecting consumers from undue financial strain.”

Instead, the minister suggested that a more balanced adjustment, likely between 30% and 60%, is under consideration. He assured that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is working to finalize a figure that balances affordability for consumers with sector sustainability.

Tijani also stressed the importance of affordable telecom services for Nigeria’s economic growth and urged operators to enhance infrastructure to meet evolving consumer needs.

Meanwhile, MTN Nigeria’s CEO, Karl Toriola, speaking on Sunrise Daily, explained that telecom operators had sought a 100% tariff increase due to economic pressures.

“We are advocating for a 100% adjustment because we face the same cost burdens as aviation and power sectors, yet we haven’t implemented any tariff increase,” Toriola said. However, he acknowledged the government’s concerns and expressed optimism about a phased adjustment to stabilize the industry.

As deliberations continue, the government and industry stakeholders aim to find a middle ground that sustains operations without overwhelming consumers.
