Nigerian singer Spyro has shed light on the challenges he faces in the music industry due to his public declaration of faith in Jesus the Christ.

In an interview on the ‘Echo Room’ podcast, Spyro delved into the discrimination he believes he faces as a result of embracing his “Jesus Boy” brand.

“The biggest challenge right now would be the discrimination in the industry,” he shared. “I came out with the Jesus Boy brand, and I’ve received the biggest criticism. I’ve been dragged, and it’s hard, bro. It’s hard.”

Spyro expressed frustration over the lack of media coverage for his work, despite his commercial success. “How many media guys, how many media moguls out there post me when I drop songs?” he asked. “You see them posting other artistes like, ‘Young John just dropped a song,’ but how many of them post me? Aside from the blogs I pay, where do you really see my records being highlighted?”

He pointed out that his song “Who is Your Guy” was the most-viewed Nigerian music video in 2023, yet it did not receive the recognition he felt it deserved. “It wasn’t Burna Boy, it wasn’t Wizkid. It was me. But did you hear about it? No. In Africa, it was number two overall, yet the media didn’t celebrate it.”

Spyro linked his struggles to his decision to publicly proclaim his faith. “Once you come out and declare Christ publicly, you enter a war. The whole system seems designed to drag you down,” he explained.

The singer shared advice he received from fellow artist and pastor, Banky W. “Banky W told me, ‘My major problem in the industry started immediately I said, “Jesus Christ is Lord.” When I was a bad boy, everything was fine, but the moment I decided to do it the Jesus way, the war began.’”

Spyro acknowledged that this reality has tested his resolve, but he remains committed to his faith.

Despite the hurdles, Spyro continues to celebrate his achievements, citing recent milestones like his song being featured in ‘PES 2025’ and the global popularity of “Who is Your Guy.” However, he feels these accomplishments often go unnoticed by the media.

“There shouldn’t be discrimination if you’re saying you’re promoting Afrobeat,” he argued. “But it’s like once you’re publicly associated with Christ, the media begins to look for ways to ignore you.”

Spyro’s revelations provide insight into the intersection of faith and artistry in a competitive industry, as he navigates both the joys of success and the trials of his convictions.
