Finally, Labour Party Opens Up On Otti’s Defection Rumours
By Benjamin Abioye

The Labour Party (LP) has denied rumors suggesting that Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, plans to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement on Friday, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, the LP’s National Publicity Secretary, called the claims unfounded and baseless.
Ifoh emphasized that the Labour Party remains in close contact with Governor Otti, who assured them that he has no intention of leaving the party. “It is a mere rumor and I hope it remains so. For us in the Labour Party, we are in touch with our governor, Dr. Alex Otti, and he has assured us that he is not going anywhere ahead of 2027. We believe that he will stay with us, irrespective of some of the issues we are working hard to resolve,” he explained.
The rumors had circulated regarding possible defections involving several first-term governors from opposition parties, including Otti of the Labour Party and others from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, Ifoh made it clear that there is no truth to the speculations about Otti joining the APC.
While acknowledging that defections are common in democratic systems, Ifoh insisted that Governor Otti’s situation is different. “The courts have come up several times to make interpretations regarding Section 84 of the 1999 Constitution, and many people who had defected at one time or the other had been challenged in court. So, if five governors are planning to defect, it won’t be a new thing, as it had happened in the past,” he stated.
Ifoh also attributed the rumors to the difficulties faced by some opposition governors in managing their states. However, he reaffirmed that Governor Otti remains committed to the Labour Party. “We are good in Labour Party, and our governor is with us. We are hoping that by 2027, we will have more governors in our fold,” Ifoh added.
