January 2025: Cooking Gas Prices In Nigeria
By Benjamin Abioye

The cost of cooking gas in Nigeria has become a growing concern for many households as prices continue to climb. By mid-January 2025, refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) now costs around ₦17,000, a significant jump from ₦12,000 in July 2024.Â
What’s Driving the Price Hike?Â
1. Impact of Global Oil Markets: Nigeria depends on imported LPG, so changes in international crude oil prices directly affect local gas prices.
2. Currency Challenges: A weaker Naira has made importing cooking gas more expensive, pushing up costs for consumers.
3. Increased Festive Demand: Seasonal celebrations usually lead to higher demand for cooking gas, which puts extra pressure on prices, particularly in cities.Â
Current Cooking Gas PricesÂ
– 1kg: ₦1,300
– 3kg: ₦3,900
– 5kg: ₦6,500
– 6kg: ₦7,800
– 10kg: ₦13,000
– 12.5kg: ₦16,250Â
For families that rely on LPG daily, these rising costs are straining budgets and sparking concern about long-term affordability.
