Lagos State Shuts School Over Death Of Two-Year-Old Kid
By Gideon Ayeni

The Lagos State Government has closed Smiley Kids Montessori School in Sangotedo following the tragic death of a two-year-old student in a swimming pool incident that has sparked outrage and calls for justice.
The grieving mother of the deceased child had taken to social media to demand answers, alleging a cover-up by the authorities of Smiley Kids Montessori school following the alleged death of her child in the school’s swimming pool.
In her emotional post, she explained that her daughter left home healthy but did not return alive. Initially, the school claimed the child had drowned in its swimming pool, but the mother countered with a different narrative, alleging her daughter was electrocuted and the body was later placed in the pool to disguise the cause of death.
This revelation fueled public condemnation and prompted the Lagos State Safety Commission to launch an investigation. Officials from the commission, the Office of Education Quality Assurance, and the Ministry of Education visited Smiley Kids Montessori school to conduct a thorough inquiry into the tragic event.
In a statement, the Safety Commission confirmed that the school has been sealed off pending further investigation. The government extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and reiterated its commitment to ensuring such tragedies are prevented in the future.
Director-General of the Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, stated, “Further information will be shared upon the conclusion of investigations into this unfortunate incident.” He emphasized the importance of strict compliance with safety regulations by school owners and caregivers to avoid preventable accidents.
