Nigerian-born leader of the UK Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch has once again criticized Nigeria, renewing her earlier comments about the country.

The Nigerian-born politician’s remarks stirred controversy late last year, and in her recent speech, she continued her criticism. During her first speech of 2025 at an event hosted by Onward, a British think tank focused on economic and social issues, Badenoch stated she did not want Britain to become like Nigeria.

She emphasized that it is crucial to build trust, and she believes the Conservative Party is the right one to fix Britain. Badenoch explained that without necessary reforms, the UK could end up in a situation similar to Nigeria’s. She further shared her personal experience, saying, “And why does this matter so much to me? It’s because I know what it is like to have something and then to lose it. I don’t want Britain to lose what it has.”

Badenoch recalled her childhood in a poor country and how her family became poorer despite working harder. She reflected on the impact of inflation, which drained their resources. The politician shared that at the age of 16, she returned to the UK with only her father’s last £100, hoping for a better future. “I grew up in a poor country and watched my relatively wealthy family become poorer and poorer, despite working harder and harder as their money disappeared with inflation,” she said.

She added, “I came back to the UK aged 16 with my father’s last £100 in the hope of a better life. So I have lived with the consequences of terrible governments that destroy lives, and I never, ever want it to happen here.”
