TikTok ban in US

TikTok has restored access to its 170 million users in the United States after President-elect Donald Trump announced an extension allowing the app to continue operating in the country after the ban was to come into effect.

Following the ban on TikTok endorsed by the US Supreme Court, the platform went offline on Sunday amid heightened concerns over potential data privacy issues linked to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

However, in a statement issued after Trump’s intervention, TikTok expressed gratitude for the administration’s clarity and reaffirmed its commitment to working on a “long-term solution” that addresses national security concerns that it said would obviate the ban.

Trump, posting on his Truth Social account, confirmed plans to issue an executive order on Monday to delay enforcement of the ban against TikTok while securing terms that protect American data. The Supreme Court had recently upheld a law requiring ByteDance to divest its U.S. operations to comply with security regulations.

Previously a vocal critic of the platform, Trump has since acknowledged its influence, particularly its role in mobilizing younger voters during his campaign.

As TikTok navigates ongoing legal challenges and the ban by the US government, its return marks a significant moment for millions of creators and users who rely on the app’s global reach for entertainment, engagement, and social impact. The future, however, remains uncertain as negotiations continue to determine TikTok’s long-term viability in the U.S. market.
