Ned Nwoko to leave PDP

Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North, is planning to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), according to his spokesperson, Gloria Okolugbo.

She confirmed the move in a statement released on Sunday, explaining that the senator’s decision comes after extensive consultations with stakeholders, supporters, and constituents in Delta North.

Okolugbo attributed Nwoko’s shift to dissatisfaction with the PDP’s lack of support for his development projects aimed at benefiting the Anioma people. “Senator Ned Nwoko came prepared to serve and deliver the dividends of good governance to the Anioma people, but regrettably, he has not enjoyed the cooperation and support of his party, the PDP, in pursuing this vision. This is despite being the only PDP senator in Delta State,” Okolugbo stated.

“The senator believes it is no use remaining in a party where his campaign promises to the people of Delta North cannot be fulfilled. The marginalization of the zone has persisted for too long,” Okolugbo added.

She also shared that Nwoko has started discussions with the APC and has received positive responses regarding his developmental plans. Okolugbo emphasized that the senator’s decision is motivated by his commitment to fulfilling his promises to the Anioma people, not just by political considerations. “This decision is not just about politics but about delivering on his electoral promises to the Anioma people,” she said.

Nwoko’s main concerns include the lack of support from the state government for key projects that are crucial for Delta North’s development.

GWG.ng reports that the senator’s public calls on the PDP state government to channel state government funds into federal projects have been met with controversy by local political leaders who assert that he should rather use his position in the National Assembly to push the Federal Government to pour funds into federal projects.

While the defection will reduce the representation of the PDP in the Senate to zero, political stakeholders on ground, however, count the move as a risky move for the senator’s political future in Delta North which has never elected an APC senator. The only senator to have returned to the Senate on the platform of another party was Senator Patrick Osakwe who returned to the Senate in 2003 on the platform of Accord but with the support of the local PDP machine in Delta State.
