Iranian pop star Amir Tataloo has reportedly been sentenced to death for blasphemy, sparking controversy as Iran’s judiciary denies issuing a final verdict.

An Iranian court has reportedly sentenced popular musician Amir Hossein Maghsoudloo, known as Tataloo, to death for allegedly insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

Reports indicate that the Supreme Court overturned a previous five-year prison sentence for blasphemy, reopening the case and leading to a death sentence. “The Supreme Court accepted the prosecutor’s objection,” according to Iranian media. However, the judiciary has denied these claims, stating that no final verdict has been issued.

Tataloo, an underground artist known for blending rap, pop, and R&B, was extradited from Istanbul to Iran in December 2023. He has been detained since his return. Previously, he faced a 10-year sentence for promoting “prostitution” and was charged with anti-regime propaganda and publishing “obscene content.” Despite his controversial image, Tataloo once collaborated with conservative Iranian politicians and even released a song in support of Iran’s nuclear program in 2015.

The case has drawn attention amid a broader context of judicial actions in Iran. On Saturday, two high-profile judges in Tehran were killed in a shooting at the Supreme Court. The attacker, described as a “terrorist,” reportedly killed himself after the attack. Meanwhile, Iran continues to face criticism for its increasing use of the death penalty, with 2024 recording at least 901 executions—the highest in nine years.

UN human rights chief Volker Turk expressed alarm over the rising number of executions. “It is deeply disturbing that yet again we see an increase in the number of people subjected to the death penalty in Iran year-on-year. It is high time Iran stemmed this ever-swelling tide of executions,” he stated.

Tataloo’s case, along with the judiciary’s denial of a finalized sentence, highlights ongoing concerns about transparency and fairness in Iran’s legal system.
