Telecoms Adjust Data Prices After NCC’s 50% Tariff Increase
By Benjamin Abioye

Telecom operators in Nigeria have raised their data prices following the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) approval of a 50% tariff increase.
The NCC on Monday gave the heed to the telecom companies to adjust their pricing structures.
Major telecom companies such as MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9mobile have already updated their rates. MTN now charges ₦9,750 for 25GB of data, up from ₦6,500. Prices for smaller data plans have also increased, with 10GB now costing ₦5,250, 5GB priced at ₦2,250, and 1GB available for ₦525, compared to the previous rates of ₦3,500, ₦1,500, and ₦350, respectively.
Airtel has also raised its prices, with the 23GB plan now priced at ₦9,000, up from ₦6,000, and the 10GB plan increasing to ₦4,500, from ₦3,000. 9mobile has adjusted its 22GB data plan to ₦7,500, up from ₦5,000, and 9.5GB now costs ₦3,750, compared to the previous ₦1,500. Glo subscribers now face a price increase, with the 24GB plan rising to ₦7,500 from ₦5,000, while the 10.8GB plan costs ₦3,000, an increase from ₦2,500.
This tariff hike has sparked reactions among users, as it marks a significant rise in data prices across the country. The increase is part of an effort by telecom companies to align their prices with the rising costs of operations, which they blame on inflation, fuel price hikes, currency fluctuations, and higher infrastructure maintenance costs.
While the NCC has defended the hike, arguing that it is necessary for the sustainability of the telecom sector, the decision has raised concerns among Nigerians, many of whom are already struggling with high living costs.
This development highlights the ongoing challenges in balancing the affordability of services for consumers with the financial viability of telecom companies in Nigeria’s tough economic climate.
