By Gideon Ayeni

Nigeria is mourning the loss of former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, who passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at the age of 81 after a prolonged illness.
The news of the former minister’s death was confirmed by family sources and in a statement by Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State. Through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, the governor described General Useni’s demise as a profound loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the nation at large.
Governor Mutfwang praised General Useni’s exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to service, which he said had left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s security and political spheres. He highlighted the late General’s relentless efforts to foster peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State.
Reflecting on his illustrious career, the governor recounted how General Useni served Nigeria with distinction in various capacities, including as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. After retiring from the military, General Useni transitioned into politics, serving as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later representing Plateau South Senatorial District in the Senate under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.
Governor Mutfwang described General Useni as a compassionate and selfless leader whose contributions to the military, politics, and his community would remain a beacon of inspiration. “His legacy of compassion, kindness, generosity, and dedication to the well-being of others will live on in the lives of those he impacted,” he said.
Offering his condolences, the governor stated, “On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman.”
General Useni’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy of service and dedication will continue to resonate across the nation.
